Twelve Travel Questions with SPESUS

Name: Felix & Rio
Home Base: Tokyo
Last Trip: London
Next Trip: Bangkok

1. What are three things you take on every trip?

A neck-tie, two pairs of chopsticks and a bottle of Dutch Courage.

2. What is your best remedy for jet lag?

See item 3 in the answer above.

3. What is the first thing you do when you get to a new place?

Step onto the street, calm my mind and compare the reality of the place we are in to the mental image I created prior to arrival. Sometimes they are pretty close (i.e., London) but others are way off (i.e., Yangon).

4. What place has the best food? The worst food?

It’s a toss-up between Indonesian and Thai for best. Worst? Well it’s a matter of opinion, but I think everyone can agree that England is not known for its culinary delights.

5. What is one place that changed your outlook on life?

A hospital. Specifically an unintended visit to a Balinese hospital. Life is not only brief but extremely fragile. Staying focused on these harsh truths helps us lead more fulfilling lives.

6. What is your favorite travel quote?

I’ll miss the sea, but a person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing him to grow.

Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens.

The sleeper must awaken.

Duke Leto Atreides to his son Paul

7. Is there any music that inspires you to travel?

The master of melancholic-melodies: Morrissey.

8. What is your craziest true travel story?

We were caught up in the May 1998 riots in Indonesia. After being holed up in our flat for a week whilst the city (Jakarta) burned, we were graciously given seats on an American government evacuation plane and dropped off in Singapore. With very little funds we had to live rough for a couple of days while we waited to get back home. Either that, or being inside a collapsed building during the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated eastern Japan; but that’s a long story.

9. How do you think that travel videos can be useful to travelers, even if they aren’t filmmakers themselves?

To motivate, inspire and help organize. Travel videos are also just fun to watch especially on a destination you have recently visited, or are feeling nostalgic about.

10. What is the goal/philosophy of your videos?

To make our videos aesthetically pleasing, in addition to being as red-pilled as possible.

11. What advice do you have for someone who wants to make travel videos?

I remember a scene from the movie “American Beauty” where Kevin Spacey’s character Lester is arguing with his wife about her over-attachment to material possessions. He picks up a sofa cushion and begins to swing it around whilst lamenting: “… Its just a couch! This isn’t life, it’s just stuff. And it’s become more important to you than living. Well, honey, that’s just nuts.” After the exchange, he then goes on  to live the life he wants to live (rather than the one that is expected of him). Live like Lester everyday and whatever you do will nicely fall into place. Travel videos and all.

12. What is your best travel tip?

Pack light. Just a couple of changes of clothes. Wash along the way. You’ll thank yourself later if you do and curse yourself (every time you move) if you don’t.
